Gabriel Cece will be sharing his expertise, showcasing their story of rising to success, how they turned their idea into a brand, and a behind-the-scenes look at their business/product.

Break the molds, we think outside the box here, follow the legal rules and laws as they should be, but leave plenty of space for wiggle room, and figuring out a better way forward.
  • Budgeting: is a cornerstone of the foundation of any business plan, without a solid budget, you might as well light your money on fire…over the years, I have learned how to budget efficiently, rearrange when necessary, and keep it balanced enough to stay afloat amidst some really dark days. 
  • Support: can we count on our family, friends, or coworkers to help us when we need them the most? That would depend on their ability to count on us first…as support for them when they needed us, or as leaders in their journey. Just be a good person, cultivate your team, respect them and they’ll respect you, give to them, and they’ll give to you, but remember that they’re humans too, just like you.
  • ​Self-Sabotage yourself purposefully: tell yourself all the bad things, think of all the worst case scenarios, find the terrible consequences, and work your way backwards in a reverse engineering sort of way, so that you have some solutions ready to go in your pocket, before all the things do actually happenbesides, others are going to do their best to sabatoge you, so you might as well beat them to it.
  • Coping with Self-Doubt: understand that self doubt is fuel, and that we’re not perfect, nor will we ever be, and that’s okay, accept it, and we might as well learn to use it…not to chastise ourselves, but rather to push us along.
  • Discomfort is growth: if it hurts, we’re going to learn and grow through it…we don’t stop when it hurts, we don’t stop when we’re tired, we stop when we are done.
  • Understanding Uncertainty: there are very few things in this life that are guaranteed, in fact, outside of dying, change, and uncertainty, nothing is certain…we might as well get used to that fact, learn to embrace it, so we can stop living in what we think “it’s supposed to be like,” and be here now.
  • ​Failure is success in progress: every setback, every failure, everything we do on our path towards succeeding, is learning…we must hope for the best, expect failure, and plan to fail, so we know how to get back up again, in order to keep learning and growing.
  • ​Persistence: just keep going, just keep going, just keep going, never ever give up, and don’t fuckin’die.
  • ​Balance: something I wish I would’ve learned sooner is a life work balance, as I’ve had very little for most of my career, and it’s usually too late when we figure it out…work hard, play hard, rest hard, repeat, not all work all the time.
  • ​It’s either fun, or it’s a lesson, but it’s always a lesson: is something I picked up from a trusted friend, a saying I’ve come to lean on quite a bit over the past year or so of my life…as a mantra when I need the reminder, and as a bit of knowledge I like to pass along, because it’s truth.

Having been tattooing since 1995, I’ve sat at many stations, worn several hats at different stages of my career, and had the pleasure of working next to some of the most creative individuals I’ve ever known. Being in Hampton Roads since 2004 has been no different. In my time in the Tidewater region, I believe that I have become the tattooer that I am meant to be, and more in touch with my own way of doing things. My artistic influences outside of tattooing are still the same as they’ve always been, as I am very much a tattooer who came up in the 90’s, and I’ve found a delicate balance in my own sur’reality, with new perspectives and some actual substance. 

Opening Studio Evolve Tattoo in 2010 was a challenge against all odds, and I’ve struggled as much as I have succeeded in the last (almost) 15 years, but I am still here…we are still here, and we will continue to grow.

As I look forward to the future, I see more tattoo studios, conventions, (both in and outside of Virginia), I have some great ideas for completely new and unique tattoo reality shows, maybe a book or two to write about it all, and some thoughts about opening other businesses outside of tattooing…such a 24 hour restaurant bar, a cat or dog cafe, a skateboard shop and skatepark in an old church, and coffee shop used record store. 

I can only hope that I’ve got some time left on this plane of existence, enough inspiration and motivation to keep going, and the follow through to be the working class hero that I want to be.
